Each year for the last 3 years over 150 GCE A Level Law students from a number of Leeds High Schools and FE Colleges have benefited from mentor support from a qualified solicitor. Starting off as a small scale pilot with Addleshaw Goddard, a legal firm in Leeds City centre, the programme has grown larger and larger every year, with more and more firms coming on board to support young people. Meeting up with their mentor every two weeks at their mentors office is a daunting experience but also beneficial. A student from Notre Dame College reflected “I was really nervous going down to the offices of my mentor. It looked such an impressive place, everyone really professional, dressed smart - looking the part. I have gained so much from this experience, which I know will benefit me in my pursuit of getting into University and the legal
profession.”
The mentors have provided a whole host of activities for the students including help with presentation, mooting, research and library skills, a visit to different courts, GCE A level course work support, work experience, work shadowing and many others.
Special thank you to the following firms who have supported the programme: Addleshaw Goddard, McCormicks, Hammonds, Call Credit, Lupton Fawcet, Pinsents, DLA,Walker Morris, Gordons, Cobbetts, Radcliffes and Leeds City Council.
“The programme has been brilliant for me. I had no contact with solicitors or any idea how to get into the profession. My mentor has been really supportive and I even got work experience with the firm over the summer”.
